Esalen Institute
The non-profit Esalen Institute was founded in 1962 as an alternative education center located on 27 acres of California’s stunning Big Sur coastline. This impressive location includes meeting spaces, lodging, dining facilities, gardens, massage areas, hot springs bathing pools, and beach access. Together with a team of partners, Bill Browning worked on the master plan for renovating and repositioning this historic conference and retreat center. Critical issues included water use, wastewater, energy, and habitat/geology. Additionally, the effort involved planning the center’s redevelopment in a sequence that would allow ongoing operation of the facilities during the multi-year renovation.

Biophilic Design wins American Publishers Award

Bill Browning and Bob Fox are among the authors of a new book, Biophilic Design: The Theory, Science, and Practice of Bringing Buildings to Life edited by Yale professor Stephen Kellert and winner of the 2008 American Publishers Award for Professional and Scholarly Excellence in the Architecture and Urban Planning category.
