In the early 1990s, Bill Browning helped lead a joint government-private effort to improve the environmental performance of the White House complex in Washington, D.C. Working at the invitation of the Clinton Administration and in partnership with the American Institute of Architects, the scope of the audit and resulting recommendations included the Executive Residence, the Old Executive Office Building, the grounds, and the East and West Wings. This ongoing project resulted in $300,000 in annual energy savings, $50,000 annual water savings, increased recycling rates and improved indoor air quality.
